i tend to make slanting style a lot so i tried an upright style today for a change. i wasn't sure if the "shin" was strong enough because usually you would strengthen the "shin" with "jushi." But i kind of liked the line going up like that so i left it that way.

いつも傾真型ばかりになりがちなので、今日は気分を変えて立真型に挑戦してみました。真は従枝によってラインを強くするのが普通なので、果たしてちゃんと強く表現されているか不安でしたが、上に伸びて行くスッキリしたラインが好きだったのでそのままにしました。

レイラの漢字をどうしようかずっと考えていたのですが、なかなか良い字がみつからなかったので、「カタカナにしちゃおう！」と思ってました。でも、日本での出生届けを提出する前日になって、「やっぱり漢字をつけてあげたい！」と急に思い立ってしまって（汗）それから夜中の１時まで漢字辞典とにらめっこ。。。旦那さんのウィリアムは日頃から綺麗の『麗』という漢字をつけたいという希望があり、『麗良』にしようと思ったのですが、私の日本での名前は旧姓のままで、それとのバランスがどーもイマイチ。。。しかもうちの母から「良」という字はちょっと男の子っぽいかも？という指摘がありまして、もーーーなかなか決まらなーーーーーーーいっ！（＞＜）
ウィリアムはそんな私を見かねて「ジャア、キレイノ『レイ』トヒラガナノ『ラ』ニシタラ？？」とあんぽんたんな事を言うし、全く役にたちません。。。

もーーーダメだ、決まんない。。。。とあきらめかけた時、ふっとひらめきました。
そーだ、『蘭』という字は？？

実はこの写真にある蘭の花、白い方のはまだレイラがお腹の中にいる時１０月の半ばに買った物なんです。寒ーい冬を乗り越えて約４ヶ月の間美しい花を咲かせてくれていました。そして最後３つの花になった時、横からまた新しい茎が伸びて来たのです！！今までの経験でいうと、（北米での話ですが）蘭の鉢植えは持って３ヶ月、新しい芽がまたでてくるなんて、相当ラッキーな人だけなんです。ところがうちの蘭さんはどんどん伸びて、現在また新しい花を咲かせました。なんとも生命力の強いこの蘭の花に私は心を打たれて、いつも「綺麗だね」とか「ありがとう」とか話しかけて大事に育てています。
このピンクの蘭も古い花は全部散って、先端の茎がまた伸びて新しい花をつけてくれましたし、私のいつもお世話になっている草月の師匠からもレイラのお祝いにとっても綺麗なピンクの蘭をいただいたのです。

ということで、この蘭の花達にちなんで、彼女の漢字は「怜蘭」としました。うちの母も気に入ってくれました。

This was the last arrangement i've done in class before having Layla.
i miss my ikebana class....（＞＜）
Scotch broom is easy to bend but hard to create a visually effective shape.
it requires a lot of trimming, bending and your patience.

My first daughter Layla was born on March 18. 3 weeks earlier than the due date.
Since then i really don't have time for anything else... but being her mother is a delightful experience so far. i am enjoying every minute of it!

Here is the arrangement i did for Layla's baby shower thank you card.
Many of my flower friends, family and other friends wished me a good luck and gave us so many wonderful gifts for her.

I totally forgot the name of these branches....but they are good material to learn "bending" and "trimming" techniques. They are just straight branches with lots of leaves but you can turn them into different expressions by carefully bending and trimming those leaves.

This year, I was soooooo into watching winter Olympic games and especially inspired by those figure skating athletes. I wanted to capture their artistic dancing expressions that were carefully paid attentions to the tip of their fingers through these branches. Hope my attempt was successful!

名前をすっかり忘れてしまったのですが、この枝もの花材は、「ためる」と「すく」テクニックをお勉強するのに最適です。マーケットで売られている時はただまっすぐでたくさん葉のついた枝たちですが、これらの枝をためたり、葉をすくことによって、違った表現が可能です。

今年私は、冬期オリンピックを釘付けになって見ていましたが、特にフィギュアスケートの選手達にとてもインスピレーションを受けました。彼女達の指の先まで神経の行き届いたあの芸術性の高い表現をこれらの枝を通して私も表現したかったのです。うまく伝わったでしょうか？

our good friend of chinese couple invited us for a new year lunch today.
they prepared pork rib, dumplings, shrimp salad, steamed clams and lots of veges etc.

i brought a small arrangement for them with red roses, tulips, and forsythia.

中国人カップルのお友達がチャイニーズニューイヤーのお祝いにランチに招待してくれました。
ポークリブ、野菜餃子、エビのサラダ、アサリの蒸し煮、お野菜などなど、たくさん用意してくれました。うーん、とってもおいしいかったです。＼(^O^)／

赤のバラ、チューリップ、黄色のレンギョウを使って小さなアレンジメントをプレゼントしました。赤は幸運を呼び、黄色は金運を高めるのだそうです。
